Six Cape Town based bands that you need to start following & supporting right now

South Africa has a very healthy rock music scene which consistently unearths new talent that often goes on to take on the world. With every passing year, new bands are formed and they wow rock fans and eventually build solid brands that allow them to continue rocking on for years to come. For rock music in South Africa, Cape Town is undoubtedly one of the biggest contributors to the scene, be it talent or new and exciting rock shows — the city never fails to impress.

We list some of our favourite bands from the Mother City which we think you should check out.

Runaway Nuns

The Runaway Nuns is a 5 piece band from Cape Town. The band consists of Sean Baron (guitarist/vocalist), PJ Franzsen (drums), Sihle Mkhize (bass guitarist/vocalist),Desmond Kannemeyer (guitarist/vocalist) and Noah Kaplan (tambourinist/vocalist). The band describes its sound as garage punk with psychedelic undertones and they are undoubtedly one of the freshest bands we’ve heard from the Mother City.

The Cine 400

The band consists of Ozzy (vocalist), Kazz (guitarist) and Aqeeb (keys, production). The band started in 2014 by childhood friends Kazz and Ozzy and they later added Aqeeb to solidify their move into the world of South African acoustic music. The band describes its sound as post pop and they are well on their way to the big time.

Retro Dizzy

The band consists of Nicolaas Rossouw (drummers), Andre Vlok (guitarist and backing vocalist), Stuart Dods (bass guitarist and vocalist) and Richard Liefeldt (vocalist and guitarist). The band describes its sound as garage rock fused with surf and psychedelic rock.

The band consists of Lucas Black (guitarist and vocalist), Calvin Siderfin (bass guitarist), Nicolaas Rossouw (drummer), Joshua Van Zyl (guitarist), Paul de Villiers (keys and vocalist). The band describes its sound as post-punk shoe gaze and they are breaking through in the rock scene in South Africa.

The band consists of Dylan Rooibokkie ( guitarist and vocalist), Warren Fisher (guitarist), Michael Clarkson (bass guitarist) and Charl Stemmet (drummers). The band describes its sound as garage punk and they are undoubtedly one of the most cutting edge bands in the country.
