PREMIERE: Joburg-based producer, MelV, partners up with Oti5 for a collab EP

Johannesburg-based producer, MelV, is back. Having impressed us a few months ago with his unique approach to trap, MelV has proven that he is not stopping for anything. This time around he calls up Oti5, a young South African producer who is being groomed and mentored by MelV, to drop an interesting three-track EP.

The title of the EP is 00:00 which could be a reference to the time where the two producers are most creative. The title could also be a reference to the soundscapes that the EP carries – dark and heavy.

MelV (real name Melvin Mpolokeng) is hell-bent on perfecting his trap sound. With a couple of releases under his belt for his #FayaFriday campaign, he has showcased his range within the trap sub-genre. It is quite clear that MelV draws inspiration from some of the more prominent trap producers like Zaytoven and Metro Boomin.

The trap sounds is growing in popularity in South Africa and MelV is aware of that as he works towards being a household name for African trap. On his latest release, he gives us an interesting interpretation of Chief Keef’s breakout single, Sosa.

PREMIERE: MelV returns with an exciting edit of Bad n Boujee by Migos

Image via MelV

The 23 year old Johannesburg-based producer never ceases to amaze when it comes to pushing musical boundaries and himself. He returns once again with an interesting remix of Bad n Boujee, the 2016 smash hit by American group Migos. We’ve heard and loved Bad n Boujee for its heavy Atlanta trap BPM, but we’ve never heard it at a much slower BPM with drums that knock really hard. T

MelV is on his fifth week of his #FayaFriday campaign and we have been thoroughly impressed. The streets are talking and the people are really loving the music MelV is delivering. This a perfect song to kick off the weekend as we welcome spring in the Southern hemisphere.

PREMIERE: MelV releases an energy packed trap joint sure to burst your speakers

MelV strikes back with another phenomenal release. This time around he delivers a banger of note titled “D.I.Y” which is only 130 seconds long but is packed with energy, a memorable bass and character. MelV showcases grit, hunger and an urge to leave an impression with this stellar release.

The track, D.I.Y, lays reference to self-reliance and self-confidence, characteristics which producers usually lack as they are often introverts who are not interested in the limelight. MelV confidently thrusts himself before the eyes of the masses and opens himself up for critique. He is doing it himself and he dares anyone to stop him from achieving his dreams.

More and more producers are stepping out of the shadows to claim the glory that is often passed on to the rappers – MelV is definitely one of them. The confidence he has in his art is seen in how he has embarked on a brave campaign where he release music every Friday.

Meet MelV: A producer from the East Rand you need to familiarise yourself with

Since the launch of our website, the focus has shifted significantly to finding and linking up with talented acts the world over – where African artists take preference. We still value the old way of finding music and the people that make it and that happens through recommendations made by friends, family and friendly like-minded strangers.

We came across yet another talented producer, MelV, from the East Rand region, which is comprised of the border towns surrounding Johannesburg. MelV is another young artist who is hell-bent on carving a name for himself in history and it seems as if he is not letting anything deter him from becoming a household name in the South African music industry.

MelV’s production style consists of different layers of modern sounds accompanied by a unique trap-influenced bop that gives it a fresh sound. After going through 36 track strong catalogue on Soundcloud, one is forced to be enamored with the talent MelV posses. He can easily switch from Deep House to bouncy trap that to Boom Bap which further reinforces his strongest quality as a producer – being versatile. He’s been uploading songs on Soundcloud since 2013 and the progression from his first upload Rockstar to his most recent upload titled Batman (MelV Remix) is staggering and unquestionably impressive.

MelV also happens to be one of rising Johannesburg based producer, KaeB’s friend and frequent collaborator which can only mean one thing – their friendship could never be without inspiration to create music.

Follow MelV on Soundcloud. We’re definitely going to be covering more of him on our platforms.
